Ganjam Nagappa & Sons (Ganjam) is a heritage brand of handcrafted jewellery, owned and managed by the 6th and 7th generation family members with a presence in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, Tokyo and New York.
The origins of Ganjam Nagappa & Sons can be traced back to a small town called Ganjam in Orissa. The Ganjam family belonged to South Indian Brahmin community, who were devoted to the scientific study of colors, music system and their relation with jewellery. The family studied gems and applied it to their business at a young age. The unique strength of Ganjam’s Jewellery Business was based on their traditional knowledge of examining gems rather than on trading of jewellery.
The in-house case research team of PFBI has curated this case study with prime focus laid on topics like genesis of the brand “Ganjam”, the dilemma between patronage vs emotional ownership, growing the traditional heritage based on occupation vs talent in the family and sustaining traditional Indian jewellery expertise in global markets.
