Mr. Girolamo Luxardo
Luxardo S.p.A. is one of Europe's oldest continuously family-owned spirits companies and a remarkable example of transgenerational entrepreneurship. Founded in 1821 by Mr. Girolamo Luxardo, the company has remained under the ownership of the same family for more than 200 years and seven generations. From its origins as a small Maraschino liqueur distillery in Zara, Dalmatia (present-day Zadar, Croatia), Luxardo has grown into a globally recognized producer of premium liqueurs, spirits, cocktail ingredients, gourmet products, and the renowned Luxardo Maraschino Cherries.
Today, Luxardo exports to more than 90 countries and remains independently managed by the founding family. A key differentiator is its control over the entire production process, from cultivating proprietary Marasca Luxardo cherries to distillation, aging, bottling, and distribution. This commitment to quality, tradition, and innovation has enabled the company to thrive despite wars, displacement, and profound market changes.
Founding and the First Generation (1817–1829)
The story began in 1817, when Mr. Girolamo Luxardo (First Generation) moved to Zara as the consular representative of the Kingdom of Sardinia. His wife, Mrs. Maria Canevari Luxardo, became interested in perfecting Rosolio Maraschino, a traditional Dalmatian cherry liqueur. Recognizing its commercial potential, Mr. Girolamo Luxardo founded a distillery in 1821 dedicated to its production.
After eight years of refinement, the liqueur received an exclusive privilege from the Emperor of Austria in 1829, formally recognizing its superior quality. The company still proudly bears the historical designation “Privilegiata Fabbrica Maraschino Excelsior.” This achievement laid the foundation for one of Europe's longest-lasting family businesses.
Expansion and International Recognition (1830–1913)
Over the following generations, Luxardo expanded its portfolio beyond Maraschino to include products such as Sangue Morlacco Cherry Liqueur, Maraschino Cherries, Limoncello, and other specialty liqueurs.
By the late nineteenth century, Maraschino had become a globally recognized cocktail ingredient. A major milestone came in 1913, when Mr. Michelangelo Luxardo (Third Generation) built a modern distillery in Zara, considered among the largest and most advanced in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This investment cemented Luxardo's position as a leading international spirits producer.
World Wars and Family Tragedy (1918–1945)
After World War I, Zara became part of the Kingdom of Italy and Luxardo grew into one of Italy's leading distilleries. However, World War II brought devastation.
Between 1943 and 1944, Allied bombings largely destroyed Zara and severely damaged the Luxardo distillery. Following the occupation by Tito's partisans, the company's assets were confiscated and nationalized. Several family members, including Mr. Pietro Luxardo, Mr. Nicolò II Luxardo, and Mrs. Bianca Luxardo, lost their lives.
Forced into exile, the surviving family members fled to Italy, leaving behind more than a century of accumulated assets. For a time, it appeared that the Luxardo story had come to an end.
Rebuilding from Scratch (1947–1980)
Giorgio Luxardo together with the young fifth generation Nicolò III
In one of the most remarkable recoveries in family-business history, Mr. Giorgio Luxardo (Fourth Generation) and Mr. Nicolò III Luxardo (Fifth Generation) rebuilt the company in 1947 in Torreglia, near Padua.
Using the family's expertise, original recipes, and determination, they established a new distillery and gradually rebuilt international distribution networks. By the 1960s, Luxardo products had regained a place on the shelves of bars and restaurants around the world.
This revival remains a powerful example of family resilience, long-term commitment, and entrepreneurial perseverance.
Modernization and Growth (1980–2015)
State-of-art bottling lines
The arrival of the sixth generation ushered in a period of modernization and investment. Luxardo expanded its facilities, bottling lines, warehouses, aging cellars, and cherry orchards while preserving traditional methods such as copper pot distillation.
The product portfolio broadened to include:
At the same time, the company strengthened its presence in the confectionery and gourmet sectors through flavorings, preserves, jams, and cocktail garnishes.
The Seventh Generation and Governance Today
With the arrival of the seventh generation in 2015, Luxardo became a rare case where three generations work together simultaneously.
Current family leadership includes:
Competitive Advantage and Luxardo Today
One of Luxardo's greatest strengths is its vertical integration. The company cultivates its own proprietary “Marasca Luxardo” cherries, developed through years of selection led by Mr. Giorgio Luxardo. Today, it controls the entire production chain, including cultivation, distillation, aging, bottling, packaging, and distribution.
The Torreglia facility spans more than 12,000 square meters, housing the distillery, bottling lines, aging rooms, warehouses, and a corporate museum celebrating the company's heritage.
Conclusion
Its success rests on five enduring pillars: family ownership, product quality, vertical integration, long-term vision, and innovation rooted in tradition. More than two centuries after its founding, Luxardo remains a benchmark example of resilience, family unity, and multi-generational entrepreneurship in the global spirits industry.
